Sir Pierre Amand Landry

Sir Pierre Amand Landry, born in 1846 in Memramcook, New Brunswick. He was a particular outstanding representative of the Acadian people. He was the son of Armand Landry of Memramcook, member of the Provincial Legislature prior to the Confederation.

Sir Pierre was a graduate of St. Joseph's University and a lawyer who had studied in the office of Sir Albert Smith in Dorchester.

He was the FIRST Acadian lawyer.

He was the FIRST man to be elected to the office of warden of the municipality of Westmorland county.

He was the FIRST Acadian in the Provincial Cabinet taking his place their in 1870 at the age of 24 when his father retired in favour of his son. In 1878, he was made Commissioner of Public Works and in 1880 became Provincial Secretary. In 1883, he became a member of Parliment for Kent County.

In 1890, he became the FIRST Acadian Judge of the County Court.

In 1893, he became the FIRST Acadian to serve on the Supreme Court of Kings Bench, later becoming Chief Justice.

In 1916, just prior to his death, the Westmorland County native was the FIRST Acadian to be Knighted. The honor was bestowed by King George V.

An interesting note was that he and Sir Albert Smith with whom he had studied were knighted and both lived their entire lifetime in Westmorland County.
