LAGRANGE Hoot

Jean Jason de LA GRANGE left LaRochelle, France, on May 28, 1719, upon the vessel "LaMarie", which was destined for the Louisiana colony. Accompaning him were his wife, Marie Ferdinande Cotet, and their daughter Isabelle Jansot. At the time of their departure, Jean was 26 years old. Upon arriving in the New World, it appears that Jean and his family first settled in Mobile. There, his son Jean Baptistewas born in 1728.

Jean Baptiste married Marie Fonteneau (Fontenot), also a native of Mobile. Marie was born in 1729 and died in 1820. It appears that Jean Baptiste and his family moved to the German Coast of Louisiana where their son Henri I was born.

Henri I married Catherine Moreau, daughter of Pierre Moreau and Marie Anne Delattre. Jean Baptiste died February 7, 1795. Henri I and Catherine carried on the LaGrange name with the birth of their son, Henri II . The family migrated from the German Coast to Pointe Coupee where land purchases were recorded. However, for some unknown reason, the LaGrange's later moved to the Attakapas District where today the name is common in Arnaudville and neighboring areas.
