JOFFEROIN Hoot

The first of the JOFFEROIN family to emigrate from France to Canada was Pierre Jofferoin . Pierre was born at Poitou, France. His name appears in the census of 1667 of Montreal, Canada. His date of birth is fixed at ca1634. His parents are not known. Pierre married Marie Briau, also called Priau, in 1668. She was born in 1649 and died on February 25, 1699. Pierre settled at Pointe-aux-Trembles and later at Vercherees, along the St. Lawrence River. Pierre abondoned his land after Iroquois raids in ca1690 and sought safety at Montreal, where he died on October 18, 1704. There were nine children born to this marriage, including Jean Jofferoin .

Jean was born in 1671. He married Catherine Milot called Lavalle at Varennes, Canada on April 17, 1698. Catherine was born at Montreal on June 2, 1665, and died at Varennes on October 10, 1708. She was the daughter of Jacques Milot called LaVal and Jeanne Hebert. Jacques was a native of Crouzille, Province of Maine, France. The youngest of their children was Joseph Jofferoin , who migrated from Canada to Pointe Coupee, La.

Joseph was born March 18, 1708, at Varennes, Canada. He was the first of his family to migrate from Canada to Louisiana. He married on April 6, 1728, at Varennes a Anne Larocq, the daughter of Jean Baptiste Larocq called Cuillau and Anne Desloriers. There is record of one child born from this marriage.

It is believed that Anne Larocq was deceased before Joseph moved to Pointe Coupee Post. Joseph remarried at Pointe Coupee on May 1, 1752 a Marie Jeanne Rabalais, the daughter of Jean Baptiste Rabalais II and Marguerite Bellanger. There were eight children known born to this couple, all born at Pointe Coupee.

Joseph Jofferoin II , seventh child of Joseph and Marie, was born December 8, 1770. Joseph II married Marie Magdeleine Bissette, the daugher of Francois Bissette and Marie Etienne, on September 10, 1795. The ceremony is registered at the St. Landry Church in Opelousas. There were six children born from this union.

Joseph III , third child of Joseph II and Marie, was born April 12, 1802. He married Manette Diedame Rabalais, the daughter of Jean Baptiste Rabalais IV and Marie Manette Gremillion on May 3, 1824. There were eight children born from this union.
