CHATLAIN
The CHATELAIN family of Avoyelles can be traced to Jacques Nicholas Chatlain I and Marianna Moreau of New Orleans. Jacques' birth records are not known. Marianna was the daughter of Jean Baptiste Moreau and Marie Ann Giraudon. We know of two sons of this marriage;
- Jacques Nicholas II
- Belony Claude
Both were residents of the Avoyelles Post during the colonial period.
Belony Claude was the second son of Jacques and Marianna. His date of birth is not known. He married on January 31, 1792, Suzanne Gauthier, daughter of Guillaume Gauthier and Elizabeth Enet.
Belony was a resident of Avoyelles as early as 1792. He served in the War of 1812 as a private in the 17th, 18th, and 19th Consolidated Regiments, Louisiana Militia. The 1820 census showed him with seven children in his household. Belony Claude died before July 1825.
Zenon Chatelain I was the first child of Belony Claude and Suzanne. He was born about 1792. He married Marcelline Jofferoin in 1811. We know of ten children of this union. Zenon died on January 28, 1847.
