Austin Hoot

John Jones Austin was a planter, soldier, and politician, was born in New York on March 18, 1775, the son of John Austenand Sarah Jones. His first marriage was in 1795 to Jane Meeker of New Jersey.

Two children, Sarah Jane (born 1796) and David (born 1797) were issue of this union. After the death of his first wife, John set out for Louisiana.

On May 22, 1803, John Austin, Thomas Crittondon, and Jeremiah Day , with their families consisting of 22 persons, on board a flat bottomed boat, had permission from the Cherokee Trading Agency to descend the Tennesse River and other waters lying in the way to Natchez.

In 1804 John Austin married Sarah Palmer of Natchez, daughter of Archibald Palmer and Hannah Carter. Shortly thereafter, he received a land grant from the Spanish government to the Feliciana's.

During the War of 1812, he served as first-lieutenant and adjutant of General Robert McCausland's Thirteenth Regiment, Third Brigade, and was at the Battle of New Orleans.

He later served as a Justice of the Peace and member of the West Feliciana Parish Police Jury. John Jones Austin died by drowning in Thompson's Creek on June 13, 1833, at the age of 58. A marker erected by Daughters of 1812 on his plantation site is in West Feliciana Parish.
